Around UK in 50 days

PROLOGUE
After 50 days in another country, it's time to start updating ppl what's going on.  I reckon my blog's been dead for the past 2 months, plus the fact that this is my first time accessing it since i'm in the UK.  Firstly, thank you those farewell greeting cards and touching but funny msgs in it, specially qianhui's Ferrari car illustration.  Well, here are the highlights of the events for the past 2 months.

Family

The gang, with me the most formal guy that gave everyone a shock

FIRST 2 WEEKS

Nottingham at a glance; Trent Building (with clocks on 4 sides, unlike only 2 in Msia)

Outside West Entrance, before heading to city

First few weeks in the UK was paradise.   Since we couldn move into Broadgate, all of us stayed temporarily in HughStewart Hall for the 1st week while at the same time settling all the registration etc.  Lots of events were organised by ISB.  For starters, it was not a bad experience; paid 5 pounds to a Barn dance which was one hell of fun but exhausting and another 5 quid to enter the best nightclub in Nottingham; OCEANA.  The Uk night life has officially encrypted into my DNA at that moment.

Basically that was highlights of first week.  And yeah, it was time to move to Broadgate Park.  Managing my luggage wasn't that easy as I still needed to drag extra yards to my 'deserted' apartment, plus the fact my flat was the highest floor.   Besides, I am the only room without any mirrors; luckily i'm a guy though.  Girls must be screaming if they get up everyday and can't see themselves in the mirror.

My room

As for 2nd week, it was Freshers' Fayre, so no lectures the entire week.  The atmosphere was nowhere the same as compared to ordinary Recruitment Drive.  Lots of free food, free stuffs and useless brochures as well.  It was rather disappointing since I only signed up a few like Nottingham Malaysian Society (regretted now) and MAgic.  But eventually, I gave up my involvement in the latter.  However, it is a good thing course after 50days, there is absolutely no time to get involved in so many extra curricular stuffs.. YEAR 2 here is indeed TOUGH..

At BBQ Lunch with several other locals (Nv seen around them until now)

ALTON TOWERS ( LATE SEPT)
Just me and hao, 2 lonely guys.  It wasn't really a good day since we experienced on and off light showers throughout the day.  We got on to the 4 most challenging rides and one word says all >> AWESOME!!!! The 4 rides rating from the most scary down the order are Oblivion, Nemesis, Rita and finally the most relaxing one, Air.

Vertically down "Oblivion"

The aftermath.....

I am tall enough

NOTTINGHAM GOOSE FAIR (4th-8th Oct)
An annual fun fair that comes only to Nottingham.  It was impossible to miss.  However, we hardly spent 2 hours thanks to NMS who only departed to the fair at half past seven.  I was somehow persuaded by my housemates to go for this ride called Tango.  It looked scary from below and indeed I was right; much much horrifying than those 4 extreme rides in Alton Towers.  The main reason is because of its random rotation up in mid-air.  We were literally being rotated in all angles even upside down positions up above.  I thought i would've thrown out but fortunately not!  Nevertheless, that £2.50 ride was worth it.  My overall spendings went to most of the booth games which seemed more like a night robbery.  But thank goodness I got something in return; a cute fat cow and Greedy Graham doll, mainly from a darting game.

The big happy family..[TV trevor-the blue underwear guy on both sides belong to Yie and Han with Greedy Graham in the middle]...Cute cows rite???

TRIP TO MERSEYSIDE n MANCHESTER (13th -15th Oct)
Managed to organise myself a short weekend trip before getting more hectic.  Sitting alone in a train for 3 and half hrs to Liverpool wasn't that easy to cope with, plus the fact that I almost missed the train from Notts to Liverpool due to a delayed transit from Beeston to Notts.  Upon reaching, greeted by my 'long lost cousin' and was immediately brought to several clubs in city centre.  Thanks to him, all my liquors and beers were paid.  That was the very first night i got myself drunk partially thanks to my cousin(alex).  Next morning, we took a day trip to Manchester.  It wasn't my intention of going so early but since it's just 45 mins by train from Liverpool.  And yes...Old Trafford was a definite stop!  I bought a 55 pound jersey with my name inprinted on it.  Other than that, just a walk within the citycentre and we had buffet dinner in a chinese restaurant for 6 quid.  A day's trip in Manchester certainly won't be enough.  By sunset, we took the train back which didn't occur to us that it was heading to Blackpool (2 hours from Liv).  We realised earlier and alighted at Preston.  Then, took a connection bus to Wigan which eventually back to Liv.  A short 45 mins trip turned into a 3 hour long journey back instead.

A museum that you need 3 days to explore it entirely.

ANFIELD

That was up to 2nd day.  Last day, we went to the 'famous' Albert docks. But before that, a short detour to Anfield.  The place and location of the stadium is totally out of my expectation.  It was nothing but  arowdy neighbourhood, identical to Cheras.  It was a windy and blustery day.  For the first time I felt cold eversince I was here!  Nevertheless, it was a breathtaking scenery overlooking the other side of the mainland.  It was glad having my cousin being my tour guide those 3 days, besides the fact that he helped in building up my alcohol tolerance. HAHA

Julie's Birthday

It is someone's birthday and yes, why not a sumptuous meal at a fine Italian dining restaurant.  Well the guys are basically my housemates while the girls are her housemates.  Three of her flatmates are from China while the other two are Hongkies.  So you would pretty much guess who they are. Big Smile The rose wine was a great combination with our main course.  Price wise, it was only £20 per person.  After the dinner, we proceeded our evening event to a church-like bar.  The interior was spectacular considering it wasn't a sin to convert a religious vicinity into an alcohol centre.

L-R: L.J, Me, Ky, Aik Kuang

All the guys are my BGP coolest flatmates.  L.J is a MSc E&E student from Beijing, China who previously did his BEng in Leicester.  With his PS2 around, he is my source of entertainment.  Ky on the other hand is a British [BBC] from London pursuing his 4th Year in Pharmacy and being regarded as the most good-looking guy among us.  The final one, yes, another 'kaki-lang'; Aik Kuang who hails from Seremban doing his 3rd Year Mech Engineering.  Formerly from UNIM, he is a very nice and helpful but somehow always being very secretive about his whereabouts and affairs whenever we ask him.  Basically, I am the youngest amongst them and am glad to have their guidance from time to time.

HOOTERS' (20th Oct)
IT was the Matlab/Simulink Coursework Submission Day and we have decided to reward ourselves with some very special dinner.  So we, the four of us immediately headed to one of a kind restaurant bar, HOOTERS; well known for big boobs with tank tops waitresses.  Hooters is famous for its spicy chicken wings and that meal was undoubtedly the best I had so far.Tongue

A typical 'Hot Hooter waitress' [Too bad it was taken only the top half]Sad

BONFIRE / GUY FAWKES FESTIVAL (5th Nov)
By far the best Fireworks show which lasted for almost quarter of an hour.  It was held at Forest Ground, same place as when the Goose Fair was held.

BREWERY TRIP (6th Nov)

Organised under our Biotechnology module, it was our first so called 'educational trip' to a beer brewery in Burton, south of Notts.  Also known as a town famous for making beer.  The entire visit was merely 45 minutes and the rest of the period was practically free and easy.

At the Brewery Museum

Just 'sampat' around; that guy is not real btw~

Obviously, a brewery  surely have its own bar.  We shared a pint of cold beer which was chilled as low as -2 degrees.  Generally after pouring, a layer of ice is seen on the surface of it.  Tasted great, though I personally think it's more or less like any other beer.  HAHA, I speak as if I were an expert.

That is technically what happened for the past 50 days....Yes..Hopefully I have more time to spend in updating it.....Tongue

DEPARTURE DAY

Within 24 hours from this moment, I shall no longer be in Malaysia.  Such a long enjoyable yet a bit dreadful 4 month holiday has finally come to an end.  Some of the ChemEng clan have to bit farewell to each other.  Despite being away for just 1 year, the future and happenings are simply unpredictable.  So sad that I have to leave you guys.  So 'keberatan' to say byebye furthermore to some people that I just started to get close with early this semester.  Perhaps it's fated that a year gap is needed to refresh and reshape our relationship.

Anyway, sorry to my other fellow bloggers for not updating my blog for the past  1 month.  I was in fact working from Merdeka Day till the 10th September. I literally worked round the clock; 9am till 9pm but pay was reasonably high.  Will elaborate more abt the job next time.

There are mixed feelings surrounding me now.  If only everyone of us cpuld be on the same plane.   Hopefully with the 7/8 hour time difference, we all could still keep in touch.

Alrite..Need to go oi oi now. Not really in the mood too; *contemplating because MU lost*

Counting down the Days

Day to my departure is drawing closer.  With exactly 30 days left, many preparations are more or less accomplished.  My big luggage is only half full, mostly are clothes and a pair of my newly bought Pepsi branded shoes. [ not kidding, the logo is vivdly displayed on the flaps].  I'm so lazy to do a check list but somehow I reckon I am the only one who started packing amongst the others.  Can't blame a person who spends most of his time at home staring at 4 walls.  Anyway, recently I have been burning my dad's credit card account.  Need not to know the exact amount but it's roughly around 4 figures.

Techinically, I left 18 days since I accepted a job working in some body-adventure exhibition, which is a 10 days non-stop routine with 2 days of training.  It should be a worthwhile but tiring experience but what the heck?? Sad to say that only 4 of us are gonna work; Me, Yie, Wen and Choon Hoe.  Anyway, these are my to-do list before 18 Sept:

  • Finish downloading all my movies and animes
  • Finish reading the 6th book of Harry Potter which just started today
  • Meet up with all my good old buddies *must*
  • Uni get-together; some mahjong, swimming and Luna Bar
  • Perhaps going paintball but this is pretty much unconvincing to be on
  • Get a pair of jeans ***

Been considering if I should bring over my current phone.  Apparently, only fixed line or known as 'pay monthly' in the UK will entitle you a free phone.  Phone types defer with different mobile networks.  Whereas if you subscribe a prepaid or they call it 'pay as you go', you can buy discounted rate phones.  Prices ranging from as low as £50 to £200.  Call charges are around 3p per minute while SMS charges are as low as 1p within the same network. Hence, this is still comparable to the rates locally after conversion.  But most probably I will go there with my existing one.

Speaking of exchange rate, it is definitely a time where the British will laugh all their way to the bank.  I went to make a bank draft few days ago. At that moment the rate was a staggering 7.10.  I can't imagine that, although it was much higher at some point last time since now I have to deal with all the monetary affairs.  The draft was made for my first out of three installments accommodation fee which costed £1474 [ convert back to Ringgit yourselves].  The fact is, accommodation cost alone can kill.  And they increase as much as £300 from last year.  There is a trend every year whereby the pound sterling rate will increase enormously around autumn because that is obviously the time when overseas student start to dig out money for fees and lodgings.

On the brightside, it's only one year and I am have no regrets of choosing this path rather than going for a full-year  course.  With so many wonderful and happy friends around me, how can I regret this very moment.  Gonna enjoy the fullest~~~

My Need Has Arrived

Music: Best of M2M

Haha, at last my lappy bag has arrived by post. THANKS SIS for all the effort of browsing around Perth and trouble of sending it back to me....although it is not what I have in mind for the first place.  I have to admit that the bag is simply awesome and unique, bet that all the others will be envious seeing it.

Frankly, mom was quite in a shock realising the postage was around $32.  But it is the thought that counts, I really like it!!!

At a glimpse...

In an attempt to test how heavy would it be, I placed the laptop and all my other items inside.  Note that the bag itself is approximately 1.58 kg.  Items are:

    • Laptop
    • Cooler
    • External hard disk
    • Card reader
    • Power cable
    • All other cables; wires; headsets

Before loading [ BTM ]

After loading [ BDM ]

cry I am still figuring out how to stuff the webcam inside as it shaped like a ball with a bloody long connecting usb cable.  All my Cds and DVDs are not accountable yet.  Damn, i probably should finish watching my O.C now rather than bringing the whole stack there. Plus I was thinking of buying another external keyboard in order to prolong the time span of my existing buttons since I often use those  ASDW, up down left right and shift buttons.

Signing off now....have some 'lunch appointment' at Midvalley tomorrow.  So pissed that someone ffk me for tomorrow's plan...Grrrr

Back

Friends and fellow bloggers, finally fee is back to his bloggy.  It's been a long time since my previous update.  My laziness and the heat wave is killing me inside.  I sweated more than ever, having breakouts! Hah, that is not usual but the heat is obviously aggravating it.  Well, the days are drawing nearer until my departure date.  Not much preparations i had made, but I have finally gotten my visa whereby it wasted my whole month just to gather and collect all the necesarry documents.  Not to mention the unfriendly staffs at VFS, the application centre and the exorbitant fee just to stay for a year in the UK.  Shocked All I got back was just a page of shinny seal with my full details attached onto my passport.  Haha

Oh yes, I have the initiative to do some shopping finally, given the fact that I loath shopping so much especially when it comes to clothings.  As for winter clothings, I have decided to buy over there and bringing some sweaters instead, just to save baggage space.  Imagine packing 36 kilos of belongings needed for one year, minus 3 kilos for my lappy, haha. Gonna plan a checklist soon Big Smile

For the info, I managed to watch pirates 2 weeks after its release and my dad decided to join too.  A lot of interesting and twsting scenes throughout the movie.  Clearly that Gore the director had in mind of making a third sequel after numerous question marks and uncertainties arised in this second part.  I personally would not say it is not nice or below my expectations.  Scenes like the prompt appearance of Barbosa shouldn't be included as it really raises the intensity of the show.  Anyhow, Dad told me it was sheer disappointment.  I would blame on the cinema environment perhaps. Maklumlah >> TGV; seriously far from the standards of GSC.  If it wasn't for the complimentary passes, I would rather pay the same for GSC.

My DVDs from Penang finally arrived in a nicely inside-protected envelope.  Enclosed was also a small Lightning McQueen fancy notepad.  Thank you Pin for all the trouble getting that for me. Lolz.

Next week onwards I might be busy, currently enquiring about a job promoting and selling photo frame in UM from Aug 7th  till 13th.  Another one could be in The MInes where until now I am still in the dark about the job description; will tell more soon. Adieu!

Early Bash

Yet another ongoing tradtion among Nottinghamers..organising burfday parties and have great time bashing them with messy whip cream or anything we can think of.  Yes, this time it is no different, the plan was initiated but was dated much earlier before his real birthday.  It was proposed at Station 1, a frequent hang out shack for all of us but this time at the Cheras bunch unlike the ones we always go in Kajang and Semenyih.

Firstly, of course we bluffed Hao saying that it would be a normal gathering for all of us to avoid any arised suspicion. The plan worked pretty well in the end; hoping him to park his car at the restaurant nearby so that Li-Ann ( yes!! She is one of the organiser aka the car decorator) together with Pek Wee could pull out a little a surprise for him.  Anyway, the others who turned up were me, Yean Yen, Qianhui, Kah Peng, Pei Wen and Choon Hoe. Oh, and the 10th unexpected guest was one familiar face we last seen few months ago; dear Mr Han who came back to Malaysia just in time while planning to make his visa.

Post incident of the cake splatting ritual.

Simple handmade Bday cards

No!! That cake cost $$$

The venue of this 'ritual'.  Ownership of this house was vaguely claimed by Li-Ann, lolz

On the downside, it wasn't much a big gathering as I anticipated since the rest are still not back in KL.  The next Birthday celebration I reckon would be in September. *cough cough* not that I am beckoning anything. Wink Neway, it was no matter what an awesome night.Shades
